Anne Hathaway made her first official red carpet appearance for Verity at the New York premiere, held at AMC Lincoln Square 13 this evening, marking her fifth and final press tour of the year.

Considering Verity is a thriller, black could hardly have been more apt, but Atelier Prabal Gurung made sure this was anything but a predictable black gown.

What immediately struck me was the silhouette. During her pregnancy, Anne has largely gravitated towards fluid shapes. Think back to the Prada look in New York and the blue chiffon Dior gown in London while promoting The Odyssey. This feels like a completely different approach.

The fitted bodice embraces her changing shape before opening into a voluminous skirt with a sweeping train, and I love that she isn’t treating maternity dressing as something that requires one particular silhouette.

I always wonder how far in advance a gown like this can realistically be made. Anne’s body is changing throughout her pregnancy, yet this has been created to follow a very particular shape, with intricate embellishments worked across the fitted bodice. The timing and fittings must be incredibly precise to get something this detailed to fit so beautifully on the night.

I’m also enjoying the return of Anne’s high ponytail. With so much happening through the gown, particularly around the neckline, keeping her hair swept back was the right call.

Bvlgari jewels completed the look, which heads straight into my top two Anne Hathaway looks of the year.
